Dog Reactivity: What It Is and How to Understand It
If your dog frequently barks, lunges, or growls when encountering other dogs, people, or even moving objects, you might be dealing with reactivity. Dog reactivity refers to exaggerated responses to specific triggers, often accompanied by intense emotional reactions. Many dog owners experience this, but it can be confusing and frustrating to handle without understanding the root causes.
ACK9 Dog Training believe It’s crucial to note that dog reactivity is not synonymous with aggression. In most cases, reactivity stems from underlying emotions such as fear, anxiety, frustration, or excitement. A reactive dog is simply communicating their discomfort or overstimulation when faced with certain situations. For instance, a dog that barks and lunges at another dog across the street might actually be scared or overwhelmed, rather than aggressive.
Why Do Dogs Become Reactive?
Dogs, much like humans, experience their environment in unique ways. Reactivity can arise for various reasons, such as:
• Fear or Anxiety: Many reactive dogs are afraid of other dogs or people, which causes them to act out to keep the perceived threat at bay.
• Frustration: Sometimes, reactivity can result from frustration, especially if a dog wants to interact with something or someone but cannot, due to a leash or distance.
• Overstimulation: Fast-moving objects like bicycles, joggers, or cars can trigger a reactive response in dogs because they become too excited and don’t know how to handle the rush of energy.
• Protectiveness: Some dogs react defensively to protect their owner or territory.
Recognizing Reactivity vs. Aggression
It’s easy to mistake a reactive dog for an aggressive one, but understanding the difference is important. A reactive dog may display intense behaviours, such as lunging or barking, but they are usually driven by fear, anxiety, or frustration. On the other hand, aggressive behaviour is typically more calculated and involves a clear intent to harm.
Understanding what triggers your dog’s reactions can help you better manage and address these behaviours. Whether it’s other dogs, people, loud noises, or moving vehicles, identifying the stimuli allows you to take steps toward reducing your dog’s reactivity.
The Importance of Early Intervention
When left unaddressed, reactivity can become more severe over time. The good news is that, with the right training and behavioural strategies, reactivity can be managed and even significantly reduced. By working with your dog on desensitization and positive reinforcement, you can help them feel more comfortable around their triggers, which leads to a more enjoyable and less stressful experience for both of you.

Danielle also helps you understand your Dogs body language and what they’re trying to tell you, and why these behaviours have become self rewarding, Danielle believes strongly that if we can create a dog to have the same self rewarding effect as they get from lunging and barking, by replacing the dogs functional reinforcer, with a new replacement behaviour we will have a more relaxed dog. These methods help address the root causes of reactivity, such as fear, anxiety, or frustration, and create a pathway toward calmer, more controlled behaviour.
Danielle works closely with both the dog and the owner, providing guidance on reading body language, managing triggers, and building confidence in various environments. The programs are designed to not only reduce reactive behaviours, such as barking or lunging, but also to strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners, ensuring long-term success. Whether your dog is reactive toward other dogs, people, or specific stimuli, Danielle’s approach is compassionate, patient, and focused on creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for both you and your dog.
