Welcoming a puppy into your home is one of life’s most rewarding experiences. At ACK9, we’re here to guide you through every step of this exciting journey. Here’s everything you need to know about puppies, along with essential training tips to help you raise a happy and well-behaved companion.

Understanding Puppies

  1. Choosing the Right Breed: Consider your lifestyle, living situation, and activity level when selecting a breed. Researching breed characteristics will help ensure a good match.
  2. Puppy-Proofing Your Home: Before bringing your puppy home, make sure your space is safe. Remove hazards, secure cords, and keep harmful substances out of reach.
  3. Socialization: Expose your puppy to various people, environments, and other animals. Positive experiences during their early months are crucial for developing a well-rounded adult dog.
  4. Health Care: Schedule a vet visit shortly after bringing your puppy home. Regular vaccinations, deworming, and check-ups are essential for their well-being.

Puppy training tips

At Ack9 Dog Training we believe that effective training is the foundation for a happy and well-behaved dog. Here are some essential tips to help you on your training journey:

1. Start with Basic Commands

  • Teach essential commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” Use positive reinforcement with treats and praise to encourage learning.

2. Establish a Routine

  • Consistency is key. Create a daily schedule for feeding, potty breaks, and training sessions to help your puppy learn faster.

3. Socialization is Crucial

  • Expose your puppy to different environments, people, and other dogs. Positive experiences during this critical period can help them grow into a well-adjusted adult dog.

4. Use Positive Reinforcement

  • Reward desired behaviour's with treats, praise, or playtime. This encourages your puppy to repeat those behaviour's.

5. Redirect Unwanted Behaviour

  • If your puppy nips or chews on furniture, redirect them to an appropriate toy. This helps them understand what is acceptable.

6. Be Patient and Consistent

  • Training takes time and patience. Stay consistent with commands and rewards, and don’t get discouraged by setbacks.

7. Teach Potty Training Early

  • Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after meals and naps. Praise them when they go potty outside to reinforce the behaviour.

8. Limit Distractions

  • During training sessions, minimize distractions to help your puppy focus on learning. Gradually increase distractions as they improve.

9. End on a Positive Note

  • Always finish training sessions with something your puppy does well. This builds their confidence and eagerness to learn more. Play is very rewarding for your new puppy so always end your session with a fun game of fetch or tug

Toilet Training Tips

  1. Establish a Schedule: Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after eating, drinking, and waking up. A consistent schedule helps them learn when and where to go.
  2. Designate a Bathroom Area: Choose a specific spot outside for your puppy to relieve themselves. This helps them associate that area with potty time.
  3. Use a Command: Introduce a simple command like “Toilet” when you take them outside. Eventually, they’ll associate the command with the action.
  4. Praise and Reward: Immediately reward your puppy with treats and praise after they go toilet outside. Positive reinforcement encourages them to repeat the behaviour.
  5. Watch for Signs: Keep an eye out for signs that your puppy needs to go, such as sniffing or circling. Take them outside right away when you notice these behaviours.
  6. Accidents are Normal: If your puppy has an accident indoors, clean it up without fuss. Avoid punishment; instead, focus on reinforcing outdoor Toilet behaviour.
